genius loci do mercado de pulgas ENCANTS em Barcelona /genius loci é uma expressão que vem do latim e significa “espírito do lugar”, atmosfera, identidade e essência de um espaço.
A minha leitura desse mercado se transformou em um vídeo e um rolo de imagens impressas.
No motion, objetos se acumulam ao som dos vendedores “cantando” para o freguês as promoções do dia. A espiral simboliza o ciclo da matéria e da memória: o que foi de alguém, torna-se de outro repetidamente. O movimento da animação também representa o fluxo presente nos objetos e nessa feira, que mesmo caótica possui sua própria forma de organizar e existir.
Para organizar essa documentação em formato de pergaminho, separei os objetos por materialidade: metal, vidro, porcelana, couro, plástico, cristal e papel. A sequência de símbolos inicia com a mão que “cria” e fecha com uma nota de 5 pounds - uma provocação sobre o percurso da matéria, que tantas vezes acaba reduzida a simples moeda de troca.
Minha inspiração para pensar a forma como narrativa foi ÃO de Tunga, onde ele desenha um circulo no espaço com o próprio rolo de filme e projeta um vídeo em repetição.
genius loci of the ENCANTS flea market in Barcelona /genius loci is a Latin expression meaning "spirit of the place," atmosphere, identity, and essence of a space.
My interpretation of this market was transformed into a video and a roll of printed images. In the motion, objects piled up to the sound of vendors "singing" to customers the day's specials. The spiral symbolizes the cycle of matter and memory: what belonged to one person becomes another repeatedly. The movement of the animation also represents the flow present in the objects and in this market, which, despite its chaotic nature, has its own way of organizing and existing.
To organize this documentation in parchment format, separate the objects by materiality: metal, glass, porcelain, leather, plastic, crystal, and paper. The sequence of symbols begins with the hand that "creates" and ends with a £5 note—a provocation about the journey of matter, which so often ends up reduced to mere currency.
My inspiration for thinking about the narrative form was Tunga's ÃO, where he drew a circle in space with his own roll of film and projected a video on repeat.
